Lighthouses across Greece open to the public this Sunday

On August 20th, Greece’s navy will open more than 27 lighthouses to the public as part of the International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend.

This event is organised on the third full weekend of August each year and is celebrated by over 400 lighthouses worldwide.

Visitors will be let in during the day, where they will be guided through and educated on the importance of lighthouses and the other nautical aids in navigation and the contribution made by lighthouse keepers.

According to the International Lighthouse Lightship Weekend (ILLW), the event, which began in 1998, attracts over 500 lighthouse entries in over 40 countries.

In Greece, the following lighthouses will be open to visitors from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday

The following Lighthouses on the mainland and islands will be open to the public:

St. Nikolaos – Kea Akrotiri – Thira Arkitsa – Fthiotida Mudari – Kythira Vrysaki – Lavrio Gerogombos – Kefalonia Gourouni – Skopelos Drepano – Chania Kassandra – Halkidiki Kastri – Othonoi Schinari – Zakynthos Kranai – Gythio Megalo Embolo – Thessaloniki Melagavi – Loutrakiou Plaka – Lemnos Korakas – Paros Kokkinopulo – Psara Alexandroupolis – Alexandroupolis Tainaro – Laconia Kopraina – Artas Kaki Kefali – Halkida Monemvasia – Laconia Lakka – Paxos Vasilina – Evia Pappa – Ikaria Spathi – Serifos Dukato – Lefkada Katakolo – Ilias Konghi – Salamina
