Two high-level officers of the Piraeus port authority are being removed by order of Shipping and Island Policy Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis on Thursday, in relation to the death of a 36-year-old man who was killed on Tuesday when he was pushed off the Blue Star ferry ‘Blue Horizon’ leaving for Crete.

Varvitsiotis issued the order to Port Authority chief Giorgos Alexandrakis, for the removal of the head of the Piraeus Port Authority and that of the First Department head there.

The man’s death has led to the arrest on Tuesday of four ship officers including the captain, who are expected to provide testimony before a prosecutor on Saturday, on charges related to manslaughter and interruption of transportation. They

remain detained. In addition, the man’s death led to the resignation of Attica Group CEO Spyros Paschalis, accepted by the ferry-owning group on Thursday.
