Germany, UK & U.S Contributed Most to Greek Tourism in 2023

The five major markets of inbound tourism to Greece, Germany, France, Italy, the UK, and the USA, contributed a total of €8.9 billion for 2023 to the Greek tourism industry, with German travelers taking the lion’s share (€2.9 billion).

According to an analysis by INSETE, the Institute of the Greek Tourism Confederation (SETE), demand for tourist services in the country is not expected to be significantly impacted by global economic developments in 2024 in the countries of origin for inbound travelers.

The report underlines that the course of inbound tourist traffic to Greece will be contingent upon the reinforcement of the international competitiveness of the Greek brand.

This goal, the analysis points out, can be achieved by implementing a targeted strategic approach based on five main pillars of infrastructure, investment and competitiveness, effective destination management, the labor marketplace, and sustainability.

Travelers from the Eurozone countries have contributed around €7.7 billion to Greek tourism, the report notes, accounting for 44% of the total in 2019.

In the first 10 months of 2023, receipts from Eurozone countries amounted to €8.8 billion, up +17% from the respective period in 2019, while international flight arrivals from the Eurozone countries, for the whole of 2023, recorded a notable 13.7% increase compared 2019.

Germany: During the first ten months of 2023, earnings from Germany amounted to €2.9 billion, showing a remarkable increase of +17% compared to the corresponding period in 2019. International air arrivals from German airports for the entire year of 2023 registered an 8.5% rise compared to 2019.

France: Greece received approximately €1.1 billion from tourism originating in France in 2019, representing 6.2% of the total.

During the first ten months of 2023, earnings from France reached €1.1 billion, showing a notable increase of +29% compared to the corresponding period in 2019.

Italy: Greece received approximately €1 billion from tourism originating in Italy in 2019, constituting 5.6% of the total.

International air arrivals from Italian airports for the entire year of 2023 increased by 16.0% compared to 2019.

United Kingdom: Greece received approximately €2.6 billion from tourism originating in the United Kingdom in 2019, constituting 14.5% of the total.

During the first ten months of 2023, earnings from the United Kingdom amounted to €2.5 billion, showing a substantial increase of +32% compared to the corresponding period in 2019. International air arrivals from UK airports for the entire year of 2023 increased by 24.4% compared to 2019.

United States: Greece received approximately €1.2 billion from tourism originating in the United States in 2019, constituting 6.7% of the total.

During the first ten months of 2023, earnings from the United States amounted to €1.1 billion, showing an increase of +7% compared to the corresponding period in 2019.
