The nine countries of the Mediterranean and Southern European Union states (EUMED 9) decided on Monday in Brussels to immediately submit a common framework of proposals for technical improvements to the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).
The meeting of the nine took place following an initiative taken by the Minister of Rural Development and Food Lefteris Avgenakis. Αvgenakis tabled 19 proposals for technical changes to the CAP.
Following the conclusion of the meeting, Αvgenakis stressed that the central issue is the response that the EU must show to the genuine, fair demands of all European farmers. “We are listening to their problems, their anxiety, and for this reason we are taking initiatives. In the coming days we will all present together a common framework of proposals for technical improvements to the CAP. We, as Greece, already have a comprehensive package of 19 interventions. This is likely to be enriched or diversified. Nevertheless, we’re starting from a base. And of course the next bold, big step is the necessary structural changes to be made in the CAP 2023-2027. It takes a long way, patience and good collaboration. Through this collaboration, many and important things may emerge from the European Union, and especially for agriculture and fisheries of Europe,” he said.
