“The draft law of the Ministry of Environment and Energy is being discussed today, in the plenary session of the Parliament, which includes arrangements for dealing with the effects of climate change in terms of water management, forest management and protection, urban resilience, the fight against unauthorised construction and energy security,” government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis said during a press briefing on Thursday.
He outlined which areas are targeted by key reforms, including water management in Thessaly, transferring responsibility for rainwater and the management of forests, which he described as a “major reform.”
“The goal is to start the active management of Greek forests and above all those forest ecosystems in southern Greece that are most vulnerable to the climate crisis, so that the excess amounts of combustible biomass can begin to be removed,” he emphasised.
Marinakis also commented on the successful issue by the Public Debt Management Agency (PDMA) of a 30-year bond on Wednesday. He noted that issue of the 30-year bond was a “significant success for the country” – as also noted by National Economy and Finance Minister Kostis Hatzidakis. “It is another vote of confidence from investors in the prospects of the Greek economy,” he pointed out.
