New Democracy continues to command voters ahead of EU elections

As the European elections near, two new polls by GPO and Prorata show the ruling conservative party commanding a strong lead..

The nationwide GPO survey, conducted for Star’s central news bulletin, shows New Democracy with a significant 16.9-point advantage over the leftist, main opposition Syriza party.

New Democracy is polling around 33 percent, a figure that echoes its 2019 European election results. Syriza, according to the polls, trails behind at 16.2 percent, followed by the socialist PASOK party at 13.2 percent.

Other parties lag far behind with Greek Solution at 8.4 percent, the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) at 8.2 percent, and smaller grouping in single-digit numbers.

The poll indicates a slight uptick in support for New Democracy, up 0.7 percent from March’s 28.8 percent. Syriza, by contrast, has seen a stronger rise of nearly 3 percent, rising from 11.7 percent to 14.4percent. PASOK, also, has picked up a notch, climbing from 11.4 percent to 11.7 percent.

In the race among European Parliament candidates, New Democracy’s Eliza Vozemberg leads with 32.1 percent of voter preferences. She is followed by George Autias and Vangelis Meimarakis, with notable figures like Pyrros Dimas and Stelios Kymbouropoulos also in the mix.

For PASOK, Nikos Papandreou tops the list with 26.5 percent, Giannis Maniatis and Sakis Arnaoutoglou rounding out the top three.

In terms of popularity, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis continues to rank top among voters, raking in 43.5 percent, with Dimitris Koutsoumbas of the KKE and Nikos Androulakis of PASOK sharing second place with 34.9 percent..

The polls underscore the shifting dynamics in Greek politics as parties gear up for the upcoming European parliamentary elections.
