A team of Spanish experts who had visited the Evros region in northeastern Greece that was ravaged by devastating wildfires last summer have submitted an 80-page report to Greek authorities with recommendations to improve prevention capabilities.

The recommendations include the redesign of the network of fire zones in the area of Soufli, the Dadia forest and Alexandroupoli, the use of controlled burning for forestry purposes, the creation of strategic points with limited flammable material to serve as fire containment zones, and bolstering of civil, military and industrial infrastructure with self-protection measures against forest fires, so that they do not absorb additional Fire Department resources.

The eight experts formed by the Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge arrived in Greece in September, conducting research for 16 days after a request by the Greek government for the activation of the EU’s Civil Protection mechanism for additional expertise in the analysis of the Evros fires.
