"We are facing significant threats and risks of escalation here. As long as Israel's actions continue, this risk persists, with Lebanon being a particular concern," highlighting Lebanese factors as harbingers of threats to Cyprus.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan expressed concerns in a recent interview with Haberturk regarding intelligence reports suggesting military use of the Greek Cypriot part of Cyprus related to Gaza.

Specifically, he addressed threatening statements made by Hezbollah’s Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah regarding Cyprus in the context of a potential extension of the Lebanon war. Fidan emphasized,

“We are facing significant threats and risks of escalation here. As long as Israel’s actions continue, this risk persists, with Lebanon being a particular concern,” highlighting Lebanese factors as harbingers of threats to Cyprus.

He pointed out ongoing military operations in Syria, noting their potential to escalate and draw in other actors. Fidan cautioned European counterparts, stating, “We have consistently warned European actors about the Republic of Cyprus’ use of its territory as a military operations centre. Reports indicate this base is utilized for operations in the Middle East despite its administrative designation. Such involvement does not bode well for Cyprus or Greece; involvement in Middle Eastern conflicts risks regional destabilization, affecting us all.”

Fidan stressed, “This logistical activity has effectively transformed into military operations,” advising against such actions for the Republic of Cyprus and Greece. His remarks follow Hezbollah’s recent comments suggesting possible repercussions if Cyprus aids Israel through its airports or bases.

While the Republic of Cyprus has supported Gaza through logistics for aid deliveries and constructing an aid pier, its president has stated neutrality in the conflict. Fidan did not disclose specific intelligence details but highlighted escalating tensions between Turkey and the Republic of Cyprus over Cyprus’ military use.
