The partnership with shipping giant Stena and Chinese shipbuilder CMJL Weihai Shipyards will see the construction of 240-meter long E-Flexer class vessels, designed for both passenger comfort and environmental responsibility.

In a groundbreaking move for Greek coastal shipping, Attica Group has signed a deal worth over €800 million to build up to four “green” cruise ferries, the largest shipbuilding project in the nation’s history.

The partnership with shipping giant Stena and Chinese shipbuilder CMJL Weihai Shipyards will see the construction of 240-meter long E-Flexer class vessels, designed for both passenger comfort and environmental responsibility.

The initial agreement covers two ships, with an option for two more, potentially pushing the deal value even higher. These innovative vessels, a Stena design, boast a capacity of 1,500 passengers and 3,320 linear meters of cargo. Their eco-friendly features include:

Quadruple fuel capability: Adaptability for future fuel advancements. Energy-efficient equipment: Reduced environmental impact. Renewable energy production units: Onboard sustainable power generation. Shore power connection: Emissions-free operation while docked.

The E-Flexers will initially enhance routes between Greece and Italy, allowing existing ships to upgrade the Piraeus-Crete lines. Subsequent vessels, if the option is exercised, will also serve Crete or Adriatic routes.

This landmark project marks Attica Group’s first major newbuild order since 2008-2009 and signifies a major leap towards sustainability. The company expects to exceed its 2030 CO2 emission reduction targets with these new vessels.

Passengers can expect a premium travel experience with the E-Flexers, featuring upgraded accommodation, dining, and entertainment areas. Certified as “methanol ready” and “battery ready,” the ships are prepared for future fuel advancements and the integration of battery technology.
