Greek MEP Fredi Beleri Temporarily Released to Assume European Parliament Seat

Fredi Beleri, a member of Albania’s ethnic Greek minority, was elected earlier this year and is set to temporarily leave prison to assume his seat in the European Parliament.

Beleri, who is currently serving a two-year prison sentence for alleged vote-buying during his tenure as mayor of Himare, Albania, will participate in the upcoming parliamentary session in Strasbourg, according to reports from state broadcaster ERT.

The decision for Beleri’s temporary release comes amidst ongoing legal proceedings in Albania, where an appeals court recently upheld his two-year sentence. This development has further strained relations between Albania and Greece, with the Greek Foreign Ministry expressing concerns over the case, citing potential implications for the rule of law in Albania.

European Commission Vice President Margaritis Schinas welcomed the news on Friday, emphasizing the importance of upholding democratic principles, including the right to vote and be elected.
