Tirana, Albania – July 18, 2024 – In a symbolic move aimed at strengthening bilateral relations, the Albanian Parliament today passed a declaration urging the Greek government to formally repeal its 1940 declaration of war. The historical declaration was issued by Athens after Mussolini’s Italian forces launched an invasion of Greece from Albanian territory, then under Italian occupation.
The declaration, while largely symbolic given the decades of peace between the two nations, highlights the lingering impact of past conflicts on contemporary relations. The Albanian Parliament expressed hope that the repeal would serve as a powerful gesture of reconciliation and further bolster the existing cooperation between Albania and Greece.
