Greece’s positions on the Cyprus issue have been formulated for decades, they are fixed and have not changed, Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis said on Monday in an interview with public broadcaster ERT.
“We do not formulate our foreign policy, especially our national positions, on the basis of the different circumstances,” he pointed out and emphasized:
“Our position is unanimous; it is expressed by the prime minister and by the entire cabinet and ministers.”
As he pointed out, in the discussion that may take place between the two leaders, “issues that have to do with the major issues of foreign policy such as the Cyprus issue can certainly be discussed, but there has never been any concession on the part of the Greek side.”
After all, he underlined, Greece’s positions are not only Greek, they are European and positions that are consistent with international law.
“Therefore, we consider that we are at this moment in a position in which we can assert our rights, not because they express our own sentiment or express our own fixed position, but because they are the very essence of International Law. We will continue to do so.”
Gerapetritis pointed out that “the Cyprus issue is a top priority for Greek foreign policy. It has been timeless and will remain so.”
