K. Sakellaropoulou on ERT: Democracy is a continuous claim

President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou gave a comprehensive interview to ERT and journalist Apostolos Maggiriadis a few hours before the reception at the Presidential Palace for the 50th anniversary of the restoration of the Republic.

In the garden of the Presidency, with the Presidential Palace in the background, Mrs. Sakellaropoulou referred to the modern Hellenic Republic and the achievements of the post-colonial period. She also discussed the challenges facing Greece in the international arena, emphasizing the need for reforms with the broadest possible consensus. She responded to criticisms for attending a dinner following the passage of the Marriage Equality Act and addressed questions about her potential second term in the Presidency. She described her personal impact on the highest state institution, touching on issues such as the Cyprus problem, justice, human rights, the climate crisis, and immigration, ending on an optimistic note for Greece’s future on the 50th anniversary of the Republic’s restoration.

Mrs. Sakellaropoulou stressed the importance of Greece’s history in setting high goals as a liberal and democratic country. She acknowledged the country’s endurance through challenges like the financial crisis and the pandemic, emphasizing that democracy is an ongoing endeavour that requires continuous improvement.

She highlighted the consolidation of liberal democracy and the normalization of electoral processes as significant achievements since the Revolution. She noted that while there were significant individual reforms, particularly in the 1975 Constitution, further legislative interventions were vital.

Regarding challenges, Mrs. Sakellaropoulou emphasized the climate crisis and demographic issues, stressing the need for international cooperation. She discussed Greece’s role as a pillar of stability in a volatile region despite ongoing crises in Ukraine and the Middle East.

Reflecting on her role as President, she emphasized the evolving nature of institutions and society, advocating for greater public engagement and unity. She expressed her commitment to traveling across Greece, engaging with citizens to bridge gaps between institutions and society.

Addressing criticisms about her involvement in post-legislation events, she defended her actions, stressing the importance of upholding individual rights and the universality of human rights in liberal democracies.

Regarding a potential second term, Mrs Sakellaropoulou stated her focus on fulfilling her current term’s duties until March 2025, leaving decisions about future terms to other institutions.

She concluded by emphasizing the importance of leaving a positive legacy and serving the collective good while in public office.
