Apostolos Christou has made Greek swimming history with his performance in the 100m backstroke final at the Olympics. Although he finished fourth, Christou’s remarkable effort brought him within a breath of securing a medal.
Christou delivered an outstanding race in the 100m backstroke final in Paris, narrowly missing out on a medal by just two-tenths of a second. He finished with a time of 52.41 seconds, setting the highest Olympic position ever achieved by a Greek swimmer. American Ryan Murphy, who clocked 52.39 seconds, claimed the bronze medal.
Italian swimmer Thomas Ceccon won the race with a time of 52.00 seconds, and Chinese competitor Jiagou Su finished second with 52.32 seconds.

Until now, the best Olympic performance by a Greek swimmer was Spyros Gianniotis’s fifth-place finish in the 1,500m freestyle at the 2004 Athens Olympics and Christian Golomeev’s fifth-place finish in the 50m freestyle at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
