In a significant shift, Sir Keir Starmer is softening the UK’s position on the ownership of the Parthenon Sculptures, signalling a potential move to return the prized artefacts to Greece. This change is part of a broader effort to improve relations with EU partners and reset the UK’s relationship with the continent.

Recently, newly appointed Culture Minister Chris Bryant addressed the issue in a written Commons response, adopting a more conciliatory tone. He noted that decisions regarding the loan or return of the Parthenon Sculptures are now under review by the British Museum Trustees rather than being a matter directly for the government.

Bryant acknowledged the efforts of museum chairman George Osborne, who has been working towards a “constructive partnership” with Greek officials. “The Trustees of the British Museum, in line with the British Museum Act 1963, are responsible for the care and management of the museum’s collections. The British Museum operates independently of the Government,” Bryant stated.

He added, “We are aware that Chair of the Trustees, George Osborne, has engaged in discussions with Greek Ministers, aiming for a collaborative approach on this issue.”
