July 2024 Records Highest Temperatures in Northern and Western Greece Since 2010

July 2024 has been recorded as the warmest July since 2010 for northern and western Greece, as well as the Ionian Sea, according to data from the National Observatory of Athens (EAA) and its network of 53 weather stations.

Temperatures in these regions were up to 3.4°C above the seasonal average. Notably, northern and western Greece experienced temperatures 1-2°C higher than last July, which was previously the second warmest July on record.

In contrast, Crete saw its third warmest July, while the rest of Greece faced temperatures that ranked as the second warmest July since 2010, following July 2023.

The network’s station in Gavalou, Etoloakarnania, reported an average maximum temperature of 38.7°C for the month, with 14 consecutive days exceeding 40°C. Several stations across Greece set new records for maximum temperatures.

In Athens, 27 out of 31 days were warmer than normal, with an average monthly maximum temperature deviation of +2.0°C. Thessaloniki recorded 26 warmer days and a +2.5°C deviation from the average. Overall, 90% of the 49 stations reported at least 26 days of above-average temperatures for July.
