A major political controversy has erupted following the revelation of an illegal and unauthorized pool constructed by SYRIZA Progressive Alliance President Stefanos Kasselakis in Spetses despite a clear ban from the Council of State.
After the “Proto Thema” report, Government Spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis commented, “The grandiose claims about the rule of law have sunk to the bottom of an illegal pool.” He criticized Kasselakis for ignoring legal provisions (set by the Tsipras government) that banned participation in offshore companies and accused him of systematically violating laws.
Detailed Statement by Pavlos Marinakis:
The newspaper Proto Thema has revealed that Stefanos Kasselakis while leading the main opposition party, constructed an unauthorized and illegal pool at his home in Spetses.
He is the same person who ignored the provisions of the law (instituted by the Tsipras government) prohibiting participation in offshore companies.
He is the political leader who preaches about our democracy and institutions from the streets of Mykonos while turning a blind eye to ongoing attacks on journalists and judges by his party’s favourite member, whom he fears to expel. He is the president of a party composed of individuals definitively condemned by the judiciary who attack it when they disagree with its decisions.
In short, grandiose words about the rule of law have sunk to the bottom of an illegal pool.
Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis also described it as “blatant illegality” in a social media post, questioning, “Are the loungers around the water tank?… Are you writing this without a shred of shame? And what do any loans of @protothema have to do with your blatant illegality? Did you say to yourself, ‘I learned about these loans, so let me build a pool where the Constitution forbids it?’… and you’re ‘Leftist and Ecologist’?”
Kasselakis: The Pool Is Actually a Tank and Well
In response, more than four hours after the issue was publicized, SYRIZA President Stefanos Kasselakis claimed that it is not a “pool” but that an old water tank, which had been in the same spot for decades (along with a well), was “renovated” with NO EXCAVATION.”
Avoiding mention of the surrounding area where loungers are visibly present, Kasselakis admitted he ordered the construction, saying, “In May 2023, I asked my engineers to submit all the necessary documents to obtain renovation permits for the house,” emphasizing that the pool at his summer residence is only 1.40 meters deep.
Following this, Government Spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis retorted, “Sometimes it’s better not to respond at all than to say ‘an old water tank was renovated’ to cover up the mess,” as the “Proto Thema” report has already made the rounds on the internet and social media.
The controversy then shifted to SYRIZA’s headquarters, which responded to the New Democracy party with a lengthy statement, noting, “For every ‘pool’ they invent, SYRIZA-PS will respond with more evidence of their corruption,” and attacked Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
Detailed Statement:
The well of corruption without a bottom speaks about a “pool”: the Mitsotakis government quickly adopted the “unprocessed” report of “Proto Thema” about the supposed “Kasselakis pool” to attack SYRIZA and its leader.
The attacks from the Maximos Mansion, through its paid guns, are now predictable. The more mud they throw at the fan, the more they reveal their panic.
However, panic is a poor advisor: the ongoing attempt to cover up the wiretapping scandal, with the latest episode being the government farce at the Institutions and Transparency Committee, along with efforts to mislead public opinion, will drag both the government and its friends in the business and media elite down.
For every “pool” they invent, SYRIZA-PS will respond with further proof of their corruption.
P.S.: It becomes a farce for New Democracy to ask for answers when it and its leader have never provided any. Will they ever address the 39 properties of Kyriakos Mitsotakis with his MP salary, Voltaire’s house in Paris, newly acquired properties in the “unexplored” Zagori mountain, and, of course, the non-declarations of wealth over the last two years?
It is worth noting that the construction of pools in Spetses is explicitly banned by the Council of State decision 2471/2016, which states: “Therefore, the construction of swimming pools in the open space of buildings within traditional settlements, and specifically in Spetses, is prohibited, as the aforementioned provisions do not explicitly allow for the construction of swimming pools in the open space of buildings. The only permitted tanks are water storage tanks, which must be placed within the building’s roof or attic in a way that does not cause aesthetic nuisance.”
