The minister announced the addition of 150 new border guards to the region, which strengthens the secondary line of migration control. This brings the total number of border guards recruited since the 2020 Evros crisis to over 1,000 across Thrace and Eastern Macedonia.

In a recent address, Greece’s Minister of Citizen Protection, Michalis Chrisochoidis, has underscored the nation’s commitment to security and stability amid regional uncertainties, describing Evros and Greece as a “oasis of stability.” During a visit to Alexandroupolis, Chrisochoidis highlighted the progress made in securing the Evros region, attributing these advancements to the strategic initiatives of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Key measures include the construction of a border fence, an increase in personnel, the deployment of advanced technology, and the concerted efforts of the Armed Forces and Hellenic Police. These actions have markedly enhanced the security of the Evros border despite external challenges.

In addressing domestic issues, Chrisochoidis reported a notable rise in domestic violence cases in the region. He praised the police for their effective response to these incidents, attributing the increase in reported cases to growing public trust in law enforcement. The government has established safe houses and specialized domestic violence units across all prefectures in Thrace to support victims.

Additionally, Chrisochoidis reported a decline in juvenile violence and an increase in the arrest of guardians responsible for minors. He emphasised the need for holding abusers accountable and ensuring that there is no leniency for those who perpetrate violence within families.

The minister’s remarks come alongside the government’s broader efforts to bolster public safety, including the ongoing construction of a new police headquarters aimed at further enhancing law enforcement capabilities.
