Greek President visits Lesvos today for celebration of the Dormition of Virgin Mary

The church was built on the top of a volcanic rock that is 40 meters high, where a Genovese fortress built in late Byzantine years used to be. The present form of the church is dated to the mid-19th century. Access to the church is by climbing 114 steps.

The Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou is visiting the island of Lesvos today for the celebration of the Dormition of Virgin Mary.

The church was built on the top of a volcanic rock that is 40 meters high, where a Genovese fortress built in late Byzantine years used to be. The present form of the church is dated to the mid-19th century. Access to the church is by climbing 114 steps.

On Wednesday, Sakellaropoulou attended the evening liturgy at the Church of Panagia Glykofiloussa, in Petra.

On Thursday, at 09:40, she will attend the  liturgy for the feast of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary at the Church of the Dormition of Virgin Mary in Agiassos.

The president is staying at Molyvos on the island.
