Greece notes rise in streptococcus cases

Greece’s National Public Health Organization (EODY) is currently investigating a concerning rise in invasive group A streptococcus (iGAS) infections, with two recent deaths prompting a team to be dispatched to a hospital in the Peloponnese.

EODY has attributed the increase in cases to the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, a trend observed across several European countries. In 2023, Greece recorded 90 iGAS cases resulting in 23 fatalities, while the current year has already seen 48 cases and 12 deaths.

A recent incident in Ilia highlighted the severity of the situation. A patient who initially appeared to have succumbed to a spider bite was later confirmed to have died from group A streptococcus. A second death with similar symptoms also tested positive for the bacteria. Notably, both victims were from different regions of the country, suggesting no common exposure.

As authorities work to understand the factors contributing to the surge, health officials are urging the public to be vigilant and seek medical attention promptly if experiencing symptoms consistent with iGAS infection.
