According to the Civil Protection, 15 of these fires were particularly dangerous, with several breaking out near residential areas. Aerial support was crucial in containing them.

Athens, Greece – The Hellenic Fire Service reported battling 44 wildfires across the country in the past 24 hours. Of these, 33 were brought under control quickly, while firefighting forces continue to tackle the remaining 11.

According to the Civil Protection, 15 of these fires were particularly dangerous, with several breaking out near residential areas. Aerial support was crucial in containing them.

Notable Incidents:

  • Marathon, Evrytania: A forest fire that erupted around 9:45 am required the deployment of 26 firefighters, 8 vehicles, 5 aircraft, and 4 helicopters. It took approximately two hours to contain the fire.
  • Litohoro, Pieria: A fire in low vegetation prompted the evacuation of the Plaka Litohoro area. 58 firefighters, 17 vehicles, 3 aircraft, and 2 helicopters were deployed alongside water tanks and construction equipment. It took two and a half hours to bring the fire under control.
  • Ioannina: A forest fire in Vasaika was brought under control within an hour thanks to the swift response of 40 firefighters, 12 vehicles, 3 aircraft, and 2 helicopters.
  • Aitoloakarnania: A fire in Pavliada, Amfilochia was contained within 30 minutes by 12 firefighters, 4 vehicles, and 4 aircraft.
  • Evia: A fire in Istiaia, Evia, was brought under control within an hour.
  • Marathon, Attica: A fire near residential areas in Marathon was brought under control in 40 minutes.
  • Filiates, Thesprotia: A forest fire in Ambelonas remains active in a hard-to-reach area but does not currently threaten residential zones.
  • Tropaia, Arcadia: A fire in Spatharis, is reportedly receding.
  • Rhodes: A fire on the island of Rhodes was brought under control in 20 minutes.

The remaining fires are being actively managed by firefighting crews. Local investigative offices and the Fire Arson Investigation Directorate are investigating the causes of each fire.
