Instead of passport stamps, travelers from non-EU countries will undergo biometric checks at airports, harbors, and land crossings. Digital photographs and fingerprints will be captured and stored within the EES, replacing the manual stamping process.

Starting November 10, 2024, European border crossings will bid farewell to the beloved passport stamp, ushering in a new era of digital border control. While many travelers lament the loss of this tangible travel memento, the European Union promises a smoother, faster, and more secure experience with its new Entry-Exit System (EES).

No More Ink, Just Scans:

Instead of passport stamps, travelers from non-EU countries will undergo biometric checks at airports, harbors, and land crossings. Digital photographs and fingerprints will be captured and stored within the EES, replacing the manual stamping process.

Who does this affect?

This change applies to everyone entering Europe from a non-EU country, regardless of whether they require a visa or not.

What about the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS)?

The EES paves the way for the ETIAS, a digital travel authorization similar to the US ESTA or the UK ETA, scheduled to launch in the first half of 2025. This system, costing €7 (A$11.50), will be valid for three years and mandatory for visa-exempt travelers.

A New Era of Border Control:

While the nostalgic charm of passport stamps fades, the EU assures travelers that the EES will streamline border crossings, reduce wait times, and enhance security through advanced technology.
