Greece Faces Extreme Fire Danger as “Orange” Alert Issued for Multiple Regions

Athens, Greece (August 25) – Greece is bracing for a day of extreme fire danger with an “Orange” alert issued for Attica, Crete, and parts of Central Greece, Peloponnese, North Aegean, Eastern Macedonia, and Thrace. The General Secretariat for Civil Protection warns of a very high fire risk (Category 4) in these areas.

Regions facing the highest risk include:

• Attica (including Athens)
• Crete
• Eastern Macedonia & Thrace (Evros, Samothrace Island, Rodopi, Xanthi)
• Central Greece (Boeotia, Evia)
• Peloponnese (Corinthia, Argolida)
• North Aegean (Lesvos, Chios, Samos, Ikaria)

Authorities have been placed on high alert, and the operational readiness of firefighting forces remains at Stage 2. Aerial and ground patrols have been intensified, with fire, police, and military personnel participating.

Residents and visitors are urged to exercise extreme caution and avoid any activities that could spark a fire, such as:

• Burning dry vegetation
• Using machinery that produces sparks
• Operating outdoor barbecues
• Discarding lit cigarettes

The burning of fields is strictly prohibited during this critical period.

Civil Protection authorities emphasize the importance of public cooperation in preventing wildfires. Citizens are advised to:

• Stay informed about fire prevention measures through the Fire Department’s website and social media channels.
• Report any signs of fire immediately.

The “Orange” alert and heightened fire danger are expected to remain in effect throughout the day.
