Santorini Imposes Temporary Ban on Private Helicopter Flights Due to Safety Concerns

Mayor of Thira, Nikolaos Zorzos, confirmed the ban in a statement to state broadcaster ERT, stating, “Until there is a licensed helipad, no helicopter flights will take place.” Zorzos explained that the prosecutor’s order stemmed from an investigation into the licensing and safety of existing helicopter landing and takeoff areas, which revealed significant deficiencies.

While the mayor stopped short of confirming a direct danger posed by the helicopter flights, he acknowledged the lack of proper licensing posed a serious concern. He emphasized the need to prioritize safety and ensure the island remains accessible and enjoyable for tourists.

The ban comes amidst growing complaints from residents and hoteliers about the noise pollution generated by the constant helicopter traffic. Currently, the only licensed helipad on the island is located at the airport, proving insufficient for the high demand.

Mayor Zorzos assured that the municipality is actively working with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to establish a municipal helipad and address the issue promptly. He underlined the importance of finding a balanced approach that accommodates tourism while safeguarding the island’s unique character.

This move aligns with Santorini’s ongoing efforts to combat over-tourism and its negative impacts. The mayor reiterated his commitment to limiting new construction projects, particularly hotels and short-term rentals, to preserve the island’s fragile ecosystem and prevent it from becoming unsustainable for residents and visitors alike.
