The first world conference on Smart Islands is to be held in Greece, hosted by the International Hellenic Association (IHA) on September 4-5, 2024, on the island of Pserimos. The event, organized in partnership with local municipalities and under the auspices of the Central Union of Municipalities of Greece (KEDE), aims to address the unique challenges faced by Greek islands, particularly those participating in the EU’s energy independence initiative.
With a focus on energy, water, education, and medical services, the conference will bring together prominent speakers and attendees to discuss strategies for sustainable development and improved quality of life. Six Greek islands, including Astypalea, Ikaria, Lesvos, Megisti, Tilos, and Psara, are part of the EU’s goal to achieve full energy independence by 2030.
Magda Tsolaki, an IHA member, emphasized the organization’s commitment to transforming all Greek islands into smart islands. “By partnering with scientific and industrial companies, we aim to address the pressing issues faced by islanders and create thriving local communities,” she stated.
The conference will feature roundtable discussions, debates, and short presentations, providing ample opportunities for participants to exchange ideas and explore innovative solutions.
