Greek Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis has announced a groundbreaking medical achievement: the first successful heart and lung transplant in Greece.

The historic operation took place at Sotiria Hospital, where a 52-year-old patient received the organs from a 49-year-old female donor.

In a social media post, Georgiadis detailed the patient’s medical history, noting that she had previously experienced multiple episodes of haemoptysis and had been under long-term care and specialised treatment at hospitals in Thessaly and Attica.

Georgiadis praised the exceptional care provided at Sotiria Hospital and highlighted the collaborative effort between the heart and lung transplant teams and the anesthesiology team from the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center. He emphasised that such a complex procedure, once considered unattainable in Greek healthcare, has now been successfully performed.

This milestone marks a significant advancement in Greece’s medical capabilities and showcases the progress made in the field of organ transplantation.
