The European Environment Agency has published a list of the cities with the cleanest air. According to the survey, only 13 European cities managed to have lower fine particle indices (ug/m3) than the agency’s limit.

Despite the titanic efforts of European countries to reduce pollutants and make the air that citizens breathe cleaner, the results are rather disappointing.

Uppsala, in Sweden, is at the top of the list, followed by Umea, which is also in Sweden. The Nordic country’s capital, Stockholm, is in 11th place, followed by Helsinki, in Finland, in 12th place.

In third place is a city in the European south, Faro, Portugal, while another city in Portugal, Funchal, on the island of Madeira, is in the top ten.

Athens is very far back on the list, at 290th place.
