Mr. Gerapetritis emphasized that the project has already received the green light from the European Commission, which conducts rigorous assessments before allocating funds. He reiterated the Greek government’s unwavering dedication to the interconnection’s completion, downplaying any perceived geopolitical risks.
“The research and laying of the electrical cable are fully permitted and secured by international law,” stated Gerapetritis. “There can be no hindrance from another state.”
This declaration appears to directly address recent objections voiced by Turkey, which disputes the project’s legality within the context of maritime boundaries in the region.
The Foreign Minister underscored the project’s importance in ending Cyprus’s energy isolation and providing much-needed relief from soaring electricity prices. He expressed confidence that the interconnection will proceed as planned, emphasizing its significance for both nations.
“The Greek state anticipates no issues related to geopolitical risks,” Gerapetritis affirmed, labeling the project as “crucial” for Cyprus’s energy future.
