Greece is expecting a new record high in tourism revenues this year, with the country’s tourism minister predicting a total of 22 billion euros ($24.48 billion). This would surpass the record set in 2023, when revenues reached 20.6 billion euros.

Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni announced the forecast at a press conference, stating that early data indicates a promising year for Greek tourism. “Greece is in the top 10 of the most popular tourist destinations in the world,” she said. “We can be hopeful that revenues could reach as much as 22 billion euros.”

Tourism is a vital pillar of the Greek economy, but a housing shortage has prompted the government to introduce measures to address the issue. Earlier this month, the country announced plans to increase the tax on short-term rentals, ban new licences in central Athens, and offer incentives to homeowners to switch to long-term rentals.

Kefalogianni elaborated on the plan, stating that the ban on new short-term rental licences in three central Athens districts will be in place for at least a year.
