Cyprus and Greece signed two bilateral agreements on Thursday regarding organ transplants, Health Minister Michalis Damianou announced.

The first agreement focuses on cross-border kidney transplants. This initiative allows the exchange of organs between the two countries when a donor is incompatible with their recipient. Now, a donor from Cyprus or Greece can swap kidneys with a compatible pair from the other nation, enhancing the chances of successful transplants.

The second agreement pertains to lung transplants. Under this arrangement, Cypriot patients will be able to receive lung transplants at the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center in Kallithea, Athens, which has the necessary expertise and facilities.

Furthermore, the agreement facilitates the transfer of organs from Cyprus to Greece’s National Transplant Organisation when local use is not possible, optimizing organ management and ensuring quicker responses to patient needs in both countries.

Damianou stated that these agreements reflect the commitment of both nations to providing equitable healthcare, ensuring that no patient is left without essential care, regardless of their case’s rarity. He expressed gratitude to the Greek government and health officials for their cooperation, emphasizing the strong bonds of friendship and solidarity between the two nations.

He also noted that this collaboration serves as a model for how Cyprus and Greece can work together for the benefit of their citizens and pledged to explore further partnerships to enhance public health.
