While the water quality remains excellent, six beaches on the island of Rhodes have been removed from the prestigious Blue Flag program for 2024. This decision comes after assessments revealed organisational shortcomings and adherence to program criteria.
Reasons for Removal:
- Failure to organize a swimming season this year.
- Deficiencies in services for bathers and visitors, including accessibility for disabled individuals.
- Lack of proper information for visitors.
- Concerns regarding safety measures for bathers and visitors.
- Insufficient environmental management practices.
- Shortcomings in coastal protection initiatives and free beach access.
Maintaining Program Integrity:
The Blue Flag program prioritizes upholding its high standards. The National Anti-Crisis Committee and the Programme Coordination Committee withdrew the awards to ensure the program’s prestige and authority.
Consequences and Next Steps:
- The six affected beaches cannot re-apply for the Blue Flag award in 2025.
- Beaches have until September 15th to voluntarily remove their Blue Flag signage. By October 31st, all program materials must be removed and replaced with an “Expiration of Period” banner.

Important Note:
While these beaches no longer hold the Blue Flag distinction, the water quality remains excellent per program standards.
