The two main fronts close to Europe, the situation in Ukraine and the Middle East, were discussed by the EU foreign ministers at their meeting on the sidelines of the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly, Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis said on Tuesday in a statement upon his arrival at the meeting.
He said the ministers had had a briefing meeting with the new Ukrainian foreign minister and had reiterated their “unwavering support.”
“This is not just a war. It is a war against revisionism, a war that concerns us all,” the minister emphasised.
Regarding the Middle East, the ministers reiterated their firm commitment “to an immediate ceasefire, their unwavering support for a two-state solution, the channeling of humanitarian aid to Gaza and the unconditional release of the hostages,” Gerapetritis said.
“We must prevent the spread of hostilities, which is a serious global threat,” he noted.
“In New York this week, we will be discussing the determination of Europeans to present our values, European values, on International Law and the peaceful resolution of disputes worldwide. And, of course, our commitment to prosperity and peace around the world,” he underlined.
“Greece will be an elected member of the United Nations Security Council for the next two years. We aspire to be a constructive bridge between South and North, between West and East.”
“We will remain committed to respecting International Law to demonstrate that the world, in the turmoil of these wars and under the shadow of authoritarian regimes, must return to the fundamental values of the Charter of the United Nations. And to return to the fundamentals that united us after World War II,” he concluded.
