Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis focused on the agreement for the 2 billion-euro Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) Project linking the electrical grids of Crete and Cyprus, among other issues, in his weekly review on social media, on Sunday. Mitsotakis stressed its importance not only for Cyprus and Greece but the entire European Union.
The prime minister emphasized the fact that this project will not only connect Cyprus to Europe’s electricity system, ensuring its energy security and reducing electricity costs, but it will further advance Greece’s goal of becoming a gateway for the transfer of clean energy to Europe.
Mitsotakis highlighted that the increase in interconnections among European countries’ networks is a critical factor in promoting the green transition. He admitted that although the negotiations were long and challenging, the parties involved managed to overcome the thorny issues and initiated the cable project, in which France is also involved.
Focusing on energy issues, he mentioned that the European Commission approved funding for the Independent Natural Gas System of Alexandroupolis with 202 million euros through the ESIF. He added that the LNG terminal in Alexandroupolis is expected to commence operations on Oct. 1.
The prime minister concluded by especially mentioning the honorary invitation extended to Greece at the recent G7 Ministers of Culture meeting held in Naples, Italy.
‘This is the first time our country has been invited to participate in this summit, and notably alongside two economic powerhouses, Brazil and India! The host of the summit, Italy’s Minister of Culture, stated that the entire European structure and the foundation of Western culture is built upon Greece,’ Mitsotakis stated.
