Summer is over, but that doesn’t mean the trips and getaways stop here.

If you live in Athens, there are excellent destinations that are offered for excursions and relaxation in the company of your beloved pet. With more accommodations and amenities being pet friendly, your dog can easily accompany you to your dream destinations.

Often, various obstacles do not allow us to take long trips: work, expensive tickets, and the pace of everyday life for those living in Athens. This makes destinations close to the Greek capital ideal.

Let’s look at three ideal destinations for excursions near Athens with your dog.

Agistri

Agistri

What can one say about this enchanting island of Argosaronicos which is only 1-1.5 hours from the port of Piraeus?

Agistri is in the heart of many Athenians as it offers affordable escapes to wonderful beaches, beautiful nature, and picturesque harbours perfect for sunset strolls.

In Agistri you’ll find everything you need: fun, relaxation, peace, opportunities for exercise and exploration, great food, and plenty of pet-friendly accommodation options. Agistri is ideal for walking, shopping, nature, and relaxing with your furry companion.

The island is still suitable for swimming in autumn. Besides, I was lucky enough to enjoy it in the rain, and I’ll never forget such an atmospheric afternoon. Agistri has no car traffic, which makes it easy to walk with your pet, while relieving you from worrying about their safety.

So pack your suitcase and your dog’s, do your research, book your ferry tickets, and get ready for a budget-friendly yet experiential vacation in the heart of autumn.

Helpful tip: If you go on nature walks with your dog, always keep in mind their needs and their abilities, which differ significantly from dog to dog, and depend on breed, age, and condition of their health. Never force your dog to follow you in activities that are difficult for them.

Vytina Vytina

Vytina is a dreamy settlement built on Mount Mainalo, at an altitude exceeding 1000m. It is known for its traditional architecture, the large central square, and the wonderful forest that surrounds it.

If this autumn you want to escape to the mountains to enjoy the trees, walk with your dog on dreamy paths full of fallen leaves, browse traditional shops, and enjoy fantastic flavours in picturesque tavernas, this trip will forever be etched in your memory.

In Vytina you will find quaint, traditional, and cozy accommodations, many of which will gladly welcome your faithful companion. This particular destination is almost two hours away from Athens, and is definitely worth visiting.

Helpful tip: Vacationing with your pet requires thought, organisation, and planning. Read the map well, plan your route and stops, and never forget to provide adequate food, hydration, and rest for your dog.

Steni Dirfyos Steni Dirfyos

Evia is the second largest island in Greece after Crete, although travellers often feels like they are in a separate part of mainland Greece when they visit.

A lot can be said about Evia, as it has a wealth of natural beauty, a variety of relaxation and entertainment options, picturesque villages, and wonderful beaches. A wonderful semi-mountainous destination in Central Evia is Steni.

If you are traveling from Athens by car, you will enter Evia via Chalkida. The trip to Steni takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes.

It is one of the most beautiful and picturesque villages of the island. Built on the foothills of the Dirfi mountain range, it is a haven for travellers looking for the peace that contact with autumn nature provides.

If your dream getaway includes hiking in nature, if you dream of retreating to forests, canyons, and streams with your pet, pack your backpack for Steni.

The landscapes you will see are fairytale-like and the experiences in autumn colors will surely be unforgettable. Your dog will become one with nature, and will enjoy moments of peace and relaxation with you.

Both Steni and the surrounding areas have pet-friendly accommodation. It is recommended that you start your search early to find an available room. Always remember to inform the property of your plans to travel with your dog before booking.

Helpful tip: Before travelling with your dog, it’s important to research carefully what the law requires you to do with your pet, as well as what their rights are. Make a list of everything you need to remember, and don’t forget to find in advance the contact details of the local vets.
