Greek Foreign Minister Affirms Sovereignty Amid Ongoing Maritime Dispute with Turkey

Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis addressed the ongoing maritime dispute with Turkey, emphasizing Greece’s unwavering commitment to its rights regarding a 12-nautical-mile territorial extension. “Greece is stronger than ever and will never renounce its right to 12 nautical miles,” Gerapetritis stated.

He underscored Greece’s entitlement to extend its maritime zones, arguing that discussions about maintaining the current 6-nautical-mile limit are futile. “We are at a critical juncture in Greece-Türkiye relations,” he added, noting that periods of calm can be unpredictable given the historical tensions between the two nations.

Gerapetritis also highlighted recent developments, mentioning that both countries’ foreign ministers have been tasked with exploring the potential for a common framework to advance discussions related to the delimitation of the continental shelf and the Exclusive Economic Zone.
