"We envision and want to put into practice the productive transformation of our economy, to become much more competitive in Europe and the world" Development Minister said.

Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos, speaking to SKAI TV on Tuesday, said that the government is striving to transform Greece’s national production model, so as to increase the economy’s productivity and competitiveness.

“We envision and want to put into practice the productive transformation of our economy, to become much more competitive in Europe and the world,” he said, while stressing that “the new production model concerns everyone, every area of the country and especially the younger generations, who we want to remain in Greece and have families.”

“Without leaving any economic activity behind, such as tourism which is the spearhead in many areas, there is a need to strengthen industry and boost it through research and innovation, in order to increase productivity and exports, with the aim of reducing the trade deficit,” he added.

In this context, the minister explained that “if the trade deficit drops, then the taxes will be lowered and the citizens’ available income will increase.”

Theodorikakos emphasised that the government will not cease its efforts to boost the disposable income of Greek citizens. In this context, the development ministry on Tuesday released a list of 123 consumer products for which there is to be a 6-15 percent price reduction.

The minister referred to the three main pillars of the development ministry’s policy in this regard: social responsibility on the part of entrepreneurs – where he noted that the price reductions announced on Tuesday were a good action; inspections by the state, despite the difficulties in the inspections mechanisms; and for the citizens to exercise their power to buy at prices that are in their best interest.

“This combination will bring more results. If we want to move forward, we must produce more and better and provide the younger generation with opportunities,” the development minister concluded.
