"The 28th of October is always a day to pay our respects and reflect. We remember those who sacrificed their lives 84 years ago so that we, today, can be free.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Monday attended the school parade for the October 28 national holiday in the west Athens district of Peristeri. In a statement afterward, he said the school children taking part in parades held throughout Greece were the “strength of our country” and that the government was obliged to provide them with the means to live better lives than their parents.

“The 28th of October is always a day to pay our respects and reflect. We remember those who sacrificed their lives 84 years ago so that we, today, can be free.

“In Thessaloniki, today, a grand parade of the Armed Forces is taking place which proves in the clearest possible way that our country is now strong, with armed forces that are fully ready to secure our national integrity and make us all feel safe,” Mitsotakis said. He also urged the younger generations to remember that democracy is a system of government that requires constant care and, chiefly, participation and civilised dialogue “because only in this manner can we learn to live together in an organised society, in spite of our differences, and ultimately thrive and make forward progress.”
