The Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food has implemented heightened preventative inspections across the country following a report of avian influenza (H5N1) in Bulgaria.

Bulgarian authorities notified their Greek counterparts on Tuesday about the confirmed case, prompting Greece to take precautionary measures due to ongoing poultry trade between the two countries.

Although current data from Greek poultry farms shows no signs of avian influenza, Greek veterinary services have been placed on high alert. Local directorates of agricultural economy and veterinary services have been directed to carry out rigorous inspections and collect samples for testing at the National Reference Laboratory. The ministry is closely monitoring the situation to protect Greece’s poultry industry and prevent any potential spread of the virus.
