The historical depth of Greece-Japan relations and the commitment of the two countries to international cooperation, international law and the international law of the sea were underlined by Deputy Foreign Minister Giorgos Kotsiras in his address to a presentation event organised by the Diplomatic and Historical Archives Service of the foreign ministry for the exhibition “ Relations between Greece and Japan through Diplomatic Documents”.
The event was held on Wednesday, at the Byzantine and Christian Museum of Athens, which is also housing the exhibition – organized on the occasion of the 2024 Greece-Japan Year of Culture and Tourism – until November 4. Subsequently, the exhibition will travel to Tokyo.
Kotsiras pointed out that Greece and Japan are this year celebrating the 125th anniversary of the beginning of their diplomatic relations. He noted that they are two democracies representing two great ancient civilisations, two countries linked by ties of friendship and mutual respect and facing common challenges.
“Our countries have established a meaningful dialogue on all important issues, on the basis of respect for international law,” said the deputy foreign minister and added that, as maritime states, Greece and Japan place special emphasis on freedom of navigation and respect for the international law of the sea.
“Greece’s participation in the UN Security Council during the two years 2025-2026 will strengthen our cooperation even more,” Kotsiras said, and underlined the prospects of further deepening the relations between the two countries and peoples.
