Greece’s relations with the US are of strategic importance, government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis said on Wednesday, in an interview with MEGA TV.
Commenting on the result of the US election, which had not yet been finalised, he said that “it was a marginal process … we have said that – regardless of the result – Greece’s relations with the US, which are of strategic importance and at their best possible point, will not be affected. Obviously, the prime minister and the government will cooperate with anyone elected …”.
Asked whether Greece is ready “to face Turkiye in new situations,” Marinakis noted that “during these years, from 2019 and 2020 when the last US elections were held, Greece is a different country. It is a much stronger country that has succeeded and has taken many more steps than other neighbouring countries because its defence policy is not defined by others. Greece has signed agreements for the F35s, Rafale and Belharra, as well as other deals which have made it more powerful, much bigger than what it was in 2020, in 2019 and earlier. And it is a country with an enhanced role both on the European and the world map.”
The spokesperson also noted that, regarding Turkiye, “we have chosen the path of dialogue, which is not a path of any concessions. Through this path of dialogue we have managed and achieved some important things.”
“Greece has deep-rooted relations with the US, the prime minister has channels of communication with both parties. This calls for a consistent and effective diplomatic foreign policy,” he added.
