The prevalence of Donald Trump in the United States presidential elections “highlights the deep division of American society and signals the return of Trumpism to power for the coming years, under terms of nearly full domination, as the Republican party now controls the Senate and is on track to control the House of Representatives,” SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance’s Political Secretariat said on Wednesday, commenting on electoral results.
It also said that Trump’s second term in power “creates serious concerns about the US’ foreign policy and geopolitical repercussions, and urgently places the European Union before its obligations. It especially places its squarely before the urgent need to face its chronic deficits, e.g. in whatever relates to the need for independent foreign policy as well as of its policy of defense and security. The new facts require the EU’s strategic independence. They require that it stops being politically indecisive and institutionally weak. They require that the EU assumes initiatives for peace in the Ukraine and Middle East fronts. They require active economic policies of support and protection of European societies before a possible trade war. They requrie a change in politics and a comprehensive and effective European strategy for a Social Europe and the reduction of regional, economic, digital, and social inequalities. They require that it continues the war against climate crisis with fair transtion policies and promotes a comprehensive, effective migration policy that respects human lives.”
On bilateral level, the main opposition party said, the government of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis must “abandon the dogma of the ally that is taken for granted and seek a mutually beneficial strategic relationship with the US aiming at supporting Greece’s sovereignty and sovereign rights and apply pressure on Turkiye for dialog, on the basis of international law, and respect of UN resolutions in relation to Cyprus.”
