His vision includes a commitment to a strong, independent judiciary and a fair, inclusive society where everyone has the right to work and the benefits of a social safety net.

The former leader of SYRIZA, Stefanos Kasselakis, officially launched his new political party, the “Movement for Democracy” on Saturday at the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation in Athens. The name was chosen following a three-day online vote among the organization’s supporters.

Speaking before a crowd of supporters, including several independent lawmakers, the 36-year-old outlined his vision for a new era of Greek politics. He emphasized that his party is not merely a “refresh” of existing political models but an innovative movement driven by a deep sense of Greece’s progressive past.

Kasselakis highlighted his party’s foundational principles, which are centered around participatory democracy, fostering entrepreneurship, and ensuring social mobility – what he called the “Greek Dream.”

His vision includes a commitment to a strong, independent judiciary and a fair, inclusive society where everyone has the right to work and the benefits of a social safety net.

He also stressed the need for a more efficient government and an economy built on innovation, alongside tax justice.

The party also advocates for climate and energy justice, along with policies to enhance digital democracy.

Kasselakis framed his new party as a continuation of the country’s progressive traditions.

“We carry the DNA of Greece’s history,” he said, positioning the Movement for Democracy as a force committed to both modernizing and uniting the nation.

Kasselakis now faces the challenge of securing 10 lawmakers to establish a parliamentary group for the new party.

Meanwhile, SYRIZA, which last week lost its status as the country’s official opposition, is set to elect a new leader on Sunday.
