Chrisochoidis:A total of 11,300 people arrested for incidents of domestic violence in the period Jan-Oct 2024
Citizen Protection Minister Mihalis Chrisochoidis on Monday referred to all the measures and initiatives taken to tackle incidents of violence against women, in an interview on public radio on the occasion of International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The minister noted that in his previous term in 2019 there had been no structure, no agency dealing with these issues. At the time, 3,500 incidents were recorded. In complete contrast to the current situation, where 18,400 incidents have been recorded since the beginning of the year, a six-fold increase.
Specifically, he said that “this year, so far, in the the period January-October, we have 11,300 arrests. Last year it was 5,600…. This means a very large increase in police activity, due to the increase in complaints. The officially recorded victims this year are 21,000, while last year there were 11,000.”
Chrisochoidis spoke of a very big problem that is being revealed and, as he said, it is good that women have started to “speak up, to open doors that used to be closed”. He noted that this was a positive development, in the sense that twice as many perpetrators have been arrested compared to last year. “And if we go further back, unfortunately things are even much worse,” he added.
He attributed the fact that women have started talking about abuse to the fact that there is a lot of activity on the part of the police.
