SYRIZA’s Famellos: ‘Our work has begun’

“Our work has begun,” underlined the newly-elected leader of SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance Sokratis Famellos, in statements upon his arrival at the party’s headquarters in downtown Athens on Monday. He added that he had already had meetings with party cadres for an “initial planning session” the night before.

Famellos referred to his conversation with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis after winning the party’s internal elections, while making the following comment on taxation: “From what we have seen, the budget has a VAT revenue increase of 1.5 billion euros and 1 billion euros in income tax. This is not a tax cut, it’s the opposite of that,” he said.

“I wonder whether, after five years in government, it is too early or too late for [the prime minister] to now tackle purchasing power. I think that politically it is too late, when Greece is, based on Eurostat data, among the lowest in Europe, when one quarter of the citizens are below the poverty and social exclusion thresholds, and 40% of the citizens say they cannot make ends meet,” he noted.

Famellos also accused the government that, “instead of actually occupying itself with the country’s growth, investments and the production model, its sole good results concern the excess profits – in other words, the profiteering – of a few oligopolies”.
