Data from ARCHELON and the National Parks Management of Zakynthos, Ainos, and the Ionian Islands reveal that Sekania’s nests account for more than 50% of the 2,365 total nests recorded across six beaches in the National Marine Park of Zakynthos. This achievement continues a trend of increased nesting numbers, attributed largely to protective measures enforced by WWF Greece for the past 30 years.

Zakynthos has witnessed a record-breaking nesting season for the loggerhead turtle, Caretta caretta, affirming its status as the most critical nesting site for this species in the Mediterranean. Over the 2024 season, from May to October, an unprecedented 1,201 nests were documented on Sekania Beach, a site known for its prime nesting conditions.

Despite the heartening news, Caretta caretta continues to face numerous threats including natural predators, illegal fishing, and climate change. Institutional challenges also hinder conservation efforts, with gaps in management planning and coordination posing additional risks.

In response, WWF Greece has spearheaded comprehensive protection initiatives at Sekania. These include systematic predator monitoring, guarding against illegal activities, anti-erosion projects, and annual beach cleanups. Through partnerships with local authorities, NGOs, and educational institutions, WWF is actively working to ensure the longevity of Sekania as a safe haven for the turtles.

Chariklia Minotou, Program Manager at WWF Greece in Zakynthos, expressed optimism but urged continued vigilance: “In a world where wildlife populations are dwindling, Zakynthos’ record nesting season is a beacon of hope. However, we must not become complacent. Persistent threats could undo this progress if we don’t maintain our commitment to the turtles’ protection.”

This record nesting season not only highlights the success of conservation efforts but also underscores the ongoing need for robust measures to safeguard the future of the loggerhead turtle in Greece.
