The World Travel Awards have been held annually since 1993 and for 2024 the cities competing in the same category as Athens were Edinburgh, London, New York, Paris, Rome, Dubrovnik, Venice, Rio de Janeiro, Beijing, Kyoto, Quito, Hoi An in Vietnam, Barranquilla and Santiago de Cali in Colombia.

The city of Athens received the title of the World’s Leading Cultural Destination, at the World Travel Awards 2024, for its rich cultural heritage and the unique experiences it offers twelve months a year to millions of of its visitors. The award ceremony took place in Madeira last Sunday (24/11) and the award was received by the managing director of Development Athens SA, Ioannis Georgizas.

In a statement the mayor of Athens Haris Doukas underlined “We are very proud of this award, which proves that Athens is a strong global brand in the field of culture. A vibrant and welcoming city, sharing with its visitors its rich cultural heritage combined with its modern, upgraded image. The municipality of Athens, continues to invest in strengthening culture through important actions and events, which bring residents and visitors into contact with the rich cultural past and present of Athens.”
