Cairo to Host Greece, Cyprus Leaders for Trilateral Summit in January
Cairo will host a trilateral summit between Greece, Cyprus, and Egypt in early January 2025, marking a decade of cooperation. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides will attend the summit to reinforce their partnership amid external pressures.
The summit will focus on strengthening ties and addressing shared regional concerns, particularly in the energy and security sectors. A key area of discussion will be the Greece-Egypt electricity grid connection (GREGY), a priority project for Egypt in its pursuit of closer EU integration. This project is viewed as a crucial step in linking North African and European energy networks.
The leaders will also discuss the situation in Libya, where both Greece and Egypt have a vested interest in stability. Egypt’s influence in eastern Libya and the increasing Turkish presence in the west underscore the importance of this issue. Egypt’s evolving relationship with Turkey, including its gradual normalization, will also be on the agenda.
Following the trilateral summit, President Sisi and Prime Minister Mitsotakis will hold a separate Supreme Cooperation Council meeting to further their bilateral agenda.
This summit highlights the enduring and expanding cooperation among these Mediterranean nations, focusing on energy security, regional stability, and countering external influences.
