Greece to install 1,388 advanced traffic cameras to improve road safety

The government unveiled on Thursday a new plan to install 1,388 advanced traffic cameras nationwide to improve road safety and enforce traffic laws more effectively. The initiative seeks to reduce the number of accidents, particularly in urban areas where traffic fatalities have risen despite improvements in highway safety.
The traffic, policing and citizen safety cameras will be operational 24 hours a day and will digitally record offenses as of summer 2025.
The new cameras will digitally certify the following violations:
– exceeding the speed limit – red light violations – pedestrians crossing – helmet and seat-belt usage- mobile phone use – illegal use of auxiliary lane – driving a vehicle without insurance – circulation of a vehicle without a valid KTEO (Vehicle Technical Check Center) card.
The data collected by cameras will be integrated into a new system managed by the Ministry of Digital Governance, which will allow for the immediate recording and notification of violations, electronic issuance of fines and the option to submit appeals digitally.
The fines will be confirmed by the traffic police and will be sent to citizens’ inboxes on gov.gr or per sms, while the payment and any objections will be made digitally.
