The Attica Regional Authority has presented a new initiative aimed at tackling key challenges faced by the Greek capital, which includes 280 projects of varying sizes and importance, with a total budget of 2.16 billion euros.
Of these, 165 focus on three critical sectors: flood protection, enhancing green spaces and urban infrastructure, and strengthening welfare and social services. The initiative also comprises a platform called Athens Talks that is designed to bring together European, regional and local officials, as well as academics and experts for discussions and consultations.
Its inaugural event is taking place at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center on Tuesday. Another important parameter of the initiative is finding resources and advocating for funding to improve infrastructure.
“There are a lot of issues threatening the daily lives of Attica’s residents, many of which have remained unresolved for decades. We are advocating for resources because Attica is entitled to resources for projects that will provide solutions to real and long-standing problems,” Attica Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias said at the unveiling of Athens Talks, describing it as a “policy tool.”
The platform will also be used to publish information about the projects being carried out by the regional authorities, including their timeline, “so that citizens know when a project begins, how it’s evolving, where it may be stuck and who is responsible for any delays.”
