Titled “Measures for Raising Income, Tax Incentives for Innovation and Transformations of Businesses, and Other Regulations,” the legislation faced strong resistance from opposition parties, most of whom either voted against it or abstained by voting “present.”

The Greek Parliament approved a new tax bill on Wednesday, introduced by the National Economy and Finance Ministry, with the ruling New Democracy party securing its passage by a majority vote.

Titled “Measures for Raising Income, Tax Incentives for Innovation and Transformations of Businesses, and Other Regulations,” the legislation faced strong resistance from opposition parties, most of whom either voted against it or abstained by voting “present.”

While opposition parties like SYRIZA, PASOK-KINAL, and Niki abstained, the ultra-nationalist Spartiates party chose to vote “present.” Other opposition parties, including the Communist Party (KKE), Elliniki Lysi, and Nea Aristera, rejected the bill outright.

Deputy Minister of National Economy and Finance Christos Dimas defended the legislation during a heated debate, emphasising its focus on boosting incomes, promoting innovation, and strengthening Greece’s economy amid mounting challenges, including climate change. “This bill aims at improving citizens’ prosperity and advancing economic development through research and innovation,” Dimas stated. He acknowledged the ambitious nature of the law’s targets, urging collective effort to ensure Greece continues to progress.

Dimas highlighted that the government has implemented 72 tax and contribution cuts under New Democracy’s leadership. He dismissed opposition criticism of increased tax revenues, arguing that growth driven by economic development, anti-tax evasion measures, and reduced taxation is a positive accomplishment. “The resulting surplus revenues will return to society through enhanced services in health, education, and the social state,” he said.

In addition to the main provisions, the bill includes several notable amendments:

  • Transitional regulations for starting price determination in the event of a trial cancellation.
  • Adjustments related to the Public Real Estate Company.
  • Online gaming procedures for the Eurojackpot.
  • Measures regarding the acquisition of shares in DEPA Commercial SA.
  • Tax exemptions for gifts to the general government.

These measures were backed by New Democracy but were rejected by most opposition parties.
